Jane Brown lived in Cruddas Terrace in 1891 and 1901 although there is confusion as to whether it was number 5 or 6. She was the daughter of Gilbert and Isabella and was baptised in Birdhopecraig Presbyterian Church on 8 July 1821. It possible that she was a farm servant in the Otterburn/Elsdon area in 1841. Oddly in 1851 she was recorded as being Elizabeth Brown and living in Bog Houses, Otterburn with her three year old twin sons, John and Thomas. She hasn’t been traced in 1861 but both her sons are listed as thirteen year old shepherds – John in Hudspeth and Thomas in Shitlington. In 1871 she was still single and living in Reedsmouth Cottages with her sons aged 23. John was a railway signalman whilst Thomas was an engine cleaner. She is listed as Jane Brown in 1881 living at 11 Hutchinson Street, Bellingham and working as a needlewoman. In Cruddas Terrace her occupation is needlewoman and more specifically shirt needlewoman in 1891. She was living in 5 Cruddas Terrace at her death in the third quarter of 1901.
