Sydney Clough was living in 6 Percy Terrace, Bellingham when the 1939 Register was taken. He was employed as a sanitary inspector, meat inspector and sanitary surveyor. It would appear that he was a lodger in the Burrell household since they had been recorded occupying number 6 in 1921. He was born in Lanchester, County Durham on 1 October 1911 and was the son of Richard Clough and Annie Clough (nee Taylor). In 1921 the family were living at 65 Oakwood Road, Blackhill and Richard’s occupation was grocer and commission agent. In 1939, when Sydney was in 6 Percy Terrace, the family next door (number 7) was the Cairns. William Cairns was the headmaster of Bellingham School, and his wife was Lydia Cairns (nee Longstaff). William Cairns died on 23 May 1966 and Sydney married Lydia in the second quarter of 1967. Little is known of Sydney’s career or subsequent movements until he died on 16 October 1987 at 9 Garner Close, Chapel Park, Newcastle.
