Dodd, Annie (nee Armstrong)

Annie or Ann Dodd (nee Armstrong) was born in Bellingham in the third quarter of 1864, the daughter of George and Margaret who in 1871 were living in Hutchinson Street, Bellingham. In 1881, aged 16 she had left home and was working as a general domestic servant in the household of John Walton, a chemist at 47, Cromwell Street, Elswick, Newcastle. Surprisingly in 1891, aged 27 she was back with her parents who were living in Cruddas Terrace. At this time, she was the single mother of five year old Henry. In 1901 Annie was working as a self-employed dressmaker and was heading her own household in Cruddas Terrace. She was still single but now had four children. Henry was now fifteen and working as a general farm servant, William was ten, Joan seven, and Lily three. In 1904 she married a near neighbour, Joseph Matthew Dodd and in 1911 she and daughters, Joan and Lily were living with Joseph Matthew in 2 Cruddas Terrace. The family had been increased with the birth of Joseph (born in 1902). At this time all the children were given the surname Dodd. In 1921 William (Willie) had rejoined the family and was working at Hesleyside, Lillie was engaged in house duties whilst young Joseph was working as a putter in a coalmine. Joseph snr. and Annie were still in 2 Cruddas Terrace in 1939. Annie was widowed in 1951 and she was left £182. 17s by her late husband. Annie died, aged 91 in the first quarter of 1956.
