Dodd, Joseph Matthew
Joseph Matthew Dodd was born on 18th March 1862 and lived in 2 Cruddas Terrace for over 40 years. He was the son of Archibald and Joan Dodd who were long time inhabitants of Armstrong Square. Archibald was a farmer of 50 acres whilst in the 1891 Census Joan is recorded as a cow keeper. At his first census (1871) Joseph is described as a scholar and at the next he is a general labourer. His sister, Margaret, headed a household in 1901 which consisted of her spinster self, three unmarried brothers, a niece, and a visitor. Joseph is recorded as a mason. At the age of 39 or 40 he married Annie Armstrong, a close neighbour. Annie was a single mother of four children – Henry, William, Joan and Lily. Joseph, their child together, was born in 1902. In 1939 Joseph and Annie were still in 2 Cruddas Terrace. He died in Hexham Hospital on 15 February 1951 after which administration was granted to his widow, Ann of 2 Cruddas Terrace. He left estate worth £182. 17s.
