Isabella Hall was the second wife of John Copland Hall and lived with him in 5 Cruddas Terrace in 1939. (As John was living there in 1921 and they married in 1922 it may be safely assumed that this was Isabella’s home from 1922) She was the daughter of John, a self-employed blacksmith and his wife, Margaret. She was born in Bowden, Roxburghshire on 1 October 1891 but her parents subsequently moved to Roseden in Glendale. In 1911 she was working as a general domestic servant for Mr and Mrs Thomas Lattimer in Saltwell Hill West Park Road in Gateshead. Thomas Lattimer was corporation clerk in Gateshead Borough Council Sanitary Department. It is doubtful if anyone knows how Isabella met John Hall but before the 1921 Census they were obviously well acquainted. She had become a schoolteacher at a small school in Roxburghshire and at the Census was holidaying in Alnmouth with John’s two children, James and Margaret and the mother of John’s deceased wife’s mother, Margaret Hutton. John and Isabella married in Newcastle in the second quarter of 1922. Isabella’s death was recorded in Newcastle as having taken place on 24 April 1988.
