Maughan, Forest
At the 1871 Census Forest Maughan was living with his parents, Michael Maughan and Elizabeth Maughan in Cruddas Terrace (5 Cruddas Terrace), Bellingham. He was at that point, a scholar aged 14. He was baptised in Wark on 7 June 1857. He moved with his parents to the Bay Horse Inn, Woodburn where his father was landlord and also a farmer. In 1881 he had become a stoker on the railway and was living in lodgings in Penn Street, Elswick. He married Janet Turnbull in Newcastle in the fourth quarter of 1882 and in 1883 he was on the Electoral Register as a householder at 6, Suffolk Street, Newcastle. Little is known of Janet other than she was born in Newcastleton, Roxburghshire and may have been in service in Newcastle. They had a son, Michael James, who was born in Bellingham in 1885. In 1891 the family were resident in 1, Brookside Place, Bellingham and Forest had graduated to being an engine driver. In 1901 they were in Stephenson Terrace, Rothbury. They were back in Newcastle by 1911, living at 61, Shafto Street, Scotswood. This census reveals that he was employed by the Northern British Railway as an engine driver. (His son, Michael was a railway clerk for North Eastern Railway Company in 1911). In the 1921 Census Forest and Janet were still living in 61, Shafto Street and Forest’s official title was engine driver locomotive. Forest and Janet moved back to Bellingham and when Forest died on 21 August 1930 they were living at 4, Hawthorn Terrace. Probate was granted to Janet, the estate being worth £448 9s 4d.
