James was one of Daniel McKie’s sons, born in Newcastle on 12 January 1875. In the 1881 he was a scholar aged 6 and ten years later was following his father’s occupation of tinsmith. After his father’s death he moved into his brother Thomas’s household and like Thomas was a tinsmith. He continued lodging with Thomas and in 1911 was a labourer on the gun range proving grounds. Even in 1939 he was still living with Thomas’s family and although the latter had retired, at the age of 65 was a gun range labourer doing heavy work and working long hours. He died in the 3rd Quarter of 1943 aged 68.
