James was the son of Thomas and Annie McKie and was born on 11 June 1901. Aged ten he was a scholar living at an unspecified address in Bellingham. In 1921 he was living in 3 Cruddas Terrace with his parents and five siblings. He was employed as a tailor by Thomas Hedley of Bellingham. He married Elizabeth Coulson in the fourth quarter of 1937. Elizabeth was much younger than James, having been born on 7 May 1917. The 1939 register shows them living at Hesleyside Cottage Number 2 and James working as a labourer on the estate and sawbench. James appears to have died in the first quarter of 1959, but Elizabeth lived until 9 April 2000. Her death was recorded in Gateshead.
