Nichol, Agnes
Agnes Nichol (nee Elliot) was the daughter of James Elliott and Jane (nee Dagg) and gave her birthplace as Falstone or Wellhaugh. Her father died when she was very young – certainly her mother was a widow at the 1861 Census when Agnes was four. In 1881 her occupation was dressmaker and she was living at Falstone Railway Station. Her residence can be explained by the fact that her brother, George (35) was a railway guard and another brother, William was the stationmaster. In the final quarter of 1881 Agnes married John Nichol, the marriage being recorded in Bellingham. At that time John was employed by the NBR and in the following years the family moved with his job. They were at Falstone Station in 1881 and 1891 but their daughter Charlotte was born in Haydon Parish in 1885 and in 1901 they were at North Middleton. There then was a big change of direction as John became a farmer at High Stokoe and in 1921 he was farming at Burnbank. Agnes was widowed on 6 February 1939 when she and John were living in 2 Percy Terrace. She died 9 October 1942 and is buried with her husband in Falstone Cemetery.
