William Henry Nichols was in his son, Noah Nichols’s residence at 8 Percy Terrace, Bellingham when the 1939 was taken. He is shown as being married but his wife, Margaret Jane Nichols was living in 8 South View, Mickley which was traditionally the Nichols’ address. William was born in Haydon Bridge on 19 August 1877. His father was Noah Nichols a coalminer, and his mother Susannah Nichols. He grew up in Mickley and at the age of thirteen was working as a miner. In 1901 he was working underground as a hewer. In 1902 he married Margaret Jane, and they had three children - Noah Nichols (born 1902), Lilian Nichols (b 1904) and Ethel Nichols (1907). In 1939 when he was resident in Bellingham, he was helping his son Noah who was branch manager of the Northern Farmers’ Trade Association by being a warehouseman. It hasn’t been possible to trace his wife’s death, but William was living in 8 South View, Mickley when he died on 12 December 1954. Probate was granted in 1955 to Noah Nichols, branch manager and Lilian Nichols, spinster. The estate was worth £737 17s 5d.
