Short, John (1842 - 1910?)
John Short was the illegitimate son of Mary Short who was the oldest daughter of Joseph and Sarah Short. He was baptised in Humshaugh on 17 October 1842. He lived in with his grandparents at Walwick in 1851 when he was 8 years old and in 1861 was an apprentice blacksmith living in his uncle John Short’s household again in Walwick. John Short senior moved to Cruddas Terrace, Bellingham and John junior, now a blacksmith moved with him (1871 & 1881). John junior, like his uncle never married and in 1891 were living together in 11, Charles Street, South Shields and working as blacksmiths. In 1901 John junior was a boarder in the household of William Wright, a joiner in a local works, at Broomhope Mill, Corsenside. At this time John was working as a general labourer. There is no record locally of John’s death but the death of a John Short aged 68 is recorded in South Shields in the third quarter of 1910.
