There is a memorial to Adam Telfer (1859-1940) and Old Hemp at Woodhouse, near West Woodburn, which was unveiled in 2015. Adam Telfer was a world renowned sheepdog breeder who came from a long line of Northumbrian shepherds. In sheepdog trials, he was international champion in 1910 and 1921, and English National Champion in 1924. His most notable collie, born at Woodhouse, was Old Hemp (1893-1901) - widely regarded as 'The father of the modern border collie sheepdog'.
