George Cruddas (1788-1879) joined Sir W G Armstrong in establishing the Elswick Works in which he continued to be a partner up to his death. Until his health failed, he directed the financial affairs of the firm and it was in a great measure owing to the courage, vigour and sagacity which he brought to bear upon the commercial part of the business in its earliest days that ultimate success was secured. Hexham Courant, April 12, 1879.[1]
Cruddas Terrace is named after him.
