Clapperton, James

James Robert Clapperton was born in Corsenside around 1888, to Robert and Jane Clapperton. By 1901, the family had moved to Little Bavington and James attended school at Great Bavington, along with Turnbull Davidson. In May 1914 James married Edith Hardy and they lived in Bellingham, possibly still at Wood Head where James had been living in 1911, or at North View where Edith was living when their son was born.

Like his father, James was a gamekeeper and they were working together at Hesleyside until James enlisted in the 4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers in January 1915. Tragically, during training at Hexham he died suddenly and unexpectedly, and he was buried with full military honours in the cemetery at Bellingham on 27 February 2015. James and Edith’s son was born on 13 August 2015.
