The 42-mile single line railway ran from Border Counties Junction at Hexham on the Newcastle to Carlisle Railway and followed the River North Tyne in a northerly direction to Redesmouth. From here the railway followed the valley to the north-west, keeping to the north bank of the river until it was crossed a Kielder, some 35 miles from Hexham. Only 5 miles of the line were inScotlandwhere it rose through the barren Upper Liddlesdale to join the main line from Carlisle to Edinburgh at Riccarton Junction, at 850ft above sea level.
