George Cruddas (1788-1879) joined Sir W G Armstrong in establishing the Elswick Works in which he continued to be a partner up to his death. Until his health failed, he directed the financial affairs of the firm and it was in a great measure owing to the courage, vigour and sagacity which he brought to bear upon the commercial part of the business in its earliest days that ultimate success was secured.
