George Cruddas
George Cruddas (1788-1879) joined Sir W G Armstrong in establishing the Elswick Works in which he continued to be a partner up to his death. Until his health failed, he directed the financial affairs of the firm and it was in a great measure owing to the courage, vigour and sagacity which he brought to bear upon the commercial part of the business in its earliest days that ultimate success was secured. Hexham Courant, April 12, 1879.[1]
Cruddas Terrace is named after him.
In Elswick (later part of Newcastle) a blok of flats were named Houghton Court, after the name of the Northumberland home of the Cruddas family who had once lived in Elswick Dene House nearby.[2]
