James was the son of Thomas Robson, the estate joiner at Kirkharle, and his wife Mary Jane. He was born on 24 July 1896. He was admitted to Kirkwhelpington School on 15 April 1901 but left on 15 May 1905 when the family left the neighbourhood. (His father, Thomas, died on 29 April and the family would be living in a tied cottage) His mother moved to Percy Terrace but at the age of fourteen Thomas was working as a cattleman in Gowanburn, Plashetts for Anthony Dagg. He married Maggie E Pigg in the fourth quarter 1919 and in 1921 the couple and their one-year-old daughter, Nora were living with James’s widowed mother in 1 Percy Terrace. He was working as a railway fireman for the North British Railway. In 1939 he was described as a locomotive fireman – qualified for driving. They were living in 7 Reedsmouth Road with daughter Nora – now twenty years old and working as a post office assistant and schoolboy Thomas (born 14 October 1922). James’s death was recorded in Northumberland West in the first quarter of 1968.
