Rutherford, Elizabeth Jane
Elizabeth J Rutherford lived in 4 Percy Terrace in 1939 and died there in 1957. She was born in Donkleywood, Falstone on 20 May 1877. Her father, James Robert Rutherford, was a shepherd at the time. He had been born in Thorneyburn as had his wife, Isabella Rutherford. James graduated to being a farmer in the 1891 and subsequent censuses. Elizabeth was an only child. Various cousins appear - in 1891, Elizabet C Thompson (16) and Isabella J Thompson (6), and in 1901 it may be that Isabella Thompson is actually working for the Rutherfords as she is given the occupation of house servant domestic. Elizabeth (for the only time) is given employment in the 1911 Census – ‘farmer’s daughter, dairymaid. There was also help on the farm in 1911 with eighteen-year-old Michael John Maughan, born in Bellingham employed as a shepherd. Isabella Rutherford died aged sixty-five in 1917 and Elizabeth and her father went to live in Snabdough Cottage. Her father died in 4 Park Terrace, Bellingham on 30 June 1924 leaving Elizabeth £1,066 12s 8d. Whether Park Terrace is in fact 4 Percy Terrace is possible because Elizabeth was living in 4 Percy Terrace in 1939. Her fellow residents were Catherine Porter, a widow of private means, Catherine Eliza Brydon similarly a widow of private means, and Catherine Brydon, a spinster retired wages clerk. Elizabeth died in 4 Percy Terrace on 7 March 1957. She left £10,036 2s 7d. Administration on 22 May to Jonathan Thompson Watson a retired engineer and Edith Salkeld Wood (wife of James Wood.
