Sarah was the daughter of Joseph, a blacksmith and Sarah – she appears to have had a twin sister, Ann. She was born at Walwick and christened at Humshaugh on 25 July 1824. She had a son, James, who was christened in Humshaugh on 28 November 1847. In 1851 she was working as a dressmaker and living with her parents at Walwick, siblings and son James. When her brother, John Short, set up home in Walwick she and James moved in with him. When John lived in Cruddas Terrace, Bellingham in 1871 and 1881 she acted as his housekeeper. The 1881 record is the last reference I have been able to find pursuing census, marriage and death records has proved unavailing. There is however a Sarah Jane Short whose death is recorded in South Shields in the fourth quarter of 1889 when it is likely her brother and nephew were working in Jarrow.
