Turner, Elizabeth Ellen
Elizabeth Dragon was a housemaid living in 6 Percy Terrace in 1911 in the service of Joseph Curry and Jane Ellen Curry. She was born in Southwick, Sunderland and christened Elizabeth Ellen Dragon in Southwick on 7 October 1897. Her parents were William Dragon, a sinker in a coalmine and Margaret Dragon. It is probable that she was drafted into the service of the Currys in Bellingham through connections her parents had with Jane Ellen as they had been near neighbours in New Seaham. Mrs Curry had four children aged five to look after and obviously needed cheap help. She married Ernest Turner in the second quarter of 1915 but appears to have had an illegitimate son, Robert Ernest Dargan in 1914. It is almost certain the Turners emigrated to Canada since Robert E Dargan of Ontario, born in Castletown, Sunderland named his mother (maiden name Dargan) on a travel card application to enter Brazil in June 1959. The status of Robert Dargan was ‘Reverend’. He died in 1984 but there is no other easily accessible record for Elizabeth Ellen Turner.
