Ward, Mary
* Information provided by Rob Tindall 15/10/23
Mary Ward was apparently an employee in the service of Daniel McKie in Cruddas Terrace where she is listed as a 40 year-old general domestic servant born in Wrekenton. She was probably the daughter of Michael Ward who in 1861 was working as a chemical labourer but also running an alehouse at the Three Crowns Alehouse in Low Felling. Michael is regularly described as a chemical labourer as he moved around the Felling area. Mary isn’t given an occupation and strangely appears as Mary Withers aged 30 when they lived in Lammas Street Felling. I can find no trace of a marriage although Mary Ward (Withers) is a widow in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Censuses and single in 1871. After living in Cruddas Terrace, she must have had a troubled life. In 1901 she was a retired hawker and a lunatic living in the County Lunatic Asylum, East Collingwood, Morpeth. She died and was buried on 7 July 1903.
