Mary Ann was the husband of [[Thomas Armstrong]]. She was born in Warden, Hexham in 1864, although in one of the censuses her birthplace is given as Newbrough and in another specifically, Parkshields, a farm near Warden Village. She was the daughter of John, a general labourer, and Isabel Ridley. In 1871 the family were in Barrasford but by 1881, when Mary Ann was sixteen she was working as a farm labourer. She married [[Thomas Armstrong]] in the second quarter of 1885 and moved with Thomas to Bellingham. They had ten children. In 1939 they were living in Armstrong Square.
