Breckons, George

George lived at 6 Cruddas Terrace, Bellingham from at least 1921 until his death in 1940. Although in 1939 his birth was given as 15 September 1847 earlier records show him to have been nine months old in the 1851 Census and his birth was registered in Bellingham in the third quarter of 1850. His parents were Thomas, a cartman (later contractor & general cartman), and Catherine, both North Tyne natives. In 1851 the family was living in Seg Hill, Bellingham and ten years later at an unidentifiable address in Bellingham had had at least eight children. George became a shoemaker and even as late as 1891 was living with his elderly parents (In 1891 his father was 85 and his mother 79). The family were living at 1 Stokoe Buildings, Bellingham. After his parents’ deaths he was living with a niece, Jane, aged 31 a confectioner and another niece, Isabella a general domestic servant who had been born in Newcastle. No Bellingham address is given for George in 1911 but he was living with a niece, Isabella, a 27 year-old, unmarried confectioner – this may have been in the Market Place. George moved to [6 Cruddas Terrace]] and in 1921 where he was listed as a bootmaker working for Turnbulls, bootmakers. In the 1939 he is described as a shoemaker, retired and in his household there is a redacted entry. He died at Foundry Farm on 16 January 1940 although his home address is given as Cruddas Terrace. Probate for an estate worth £1170 3s 2d was granted to bank manager E E Johnson.
