James Milburn was born in Elsdon in 1838. At the age of 13 he was a house servant in the household of Otterburn grocer, the widowed Margaret Mitchell. Mrs Mitchell’s son John, a surgeon was also in residence. In 1861 James married Jane Telfer in Bellingham. They had three daughters, Mary Milburn, Margaret Ann Milburn and Elizabeth Milburn. In 1871 when the family lived at Bridgeford Cottage, James was an agricultural labourer but after his residence at 9 Cruddas Terrace, Bellingham in 1881, by 1891 he was a surfaceman and grocer living in Hott Cottage, Greystead. He was buried at Greystead on 10th April 1895.
