Shaw, David

David Shaw was living in 7 Percy Terrace, Bellingham at the 1911 and 1921 Censuses. He was the headmaster of the Council School in Bellingham. He was born in Fauldhouse, Linlithgow on 31 October 1870, the son of Thomas (An iron miner at the time of David’s birth, but later a colliery overman) and Agnes nee White. An older sister, Janet was a pupil teacher. And in 1891 David was described as En P teacher. (Enrolled Primary Teacher?) living in Crofthead, Linlithgow. In the second quarter of 1896 he married Mary Annie R Murray from Seaton Delaval, the marriage being registered in Tynemouth. From the birthplaces of their children, it appears that he taught In Newport, Monmouthshire, Thwing in East Yorkshire and Blyth before settling in Bellingham. In 1901, David and Mary Annie, and their three children, Thomas Robson Shaw, (born 1897), Agnes Annie Shaw (1899) and Janet (Jennie) Shaw (1900) were living at 17 Belgrave Road, Blyth. David was an assistant schoolmaster whilst Mary Annie wasn’t working. By 1911 the family was living in 7 Percy Terrace. He was schoolmaster (head) of the Council School and Mary Annie was schoolmistress (assistant). The Shaws were now sufficiently wealthy to employ a live-in servant, Bella Wilson aged twenty-nine. In 1921 Thomas and Agnes had left home and only David, Mary Annie and Janet were left in Number Seven. His job description was now elementary schoolmaster and Annie as elementary schoolmistress. Janet was looking after the house. They moved from Bellingham and in 1939 were living in Benwell Hill Road in Newcastle, but there was at least one further move since David died at South Bank, Riverside Rothbury on 9 March 1947. Probate was granted to Thomas Robson Shaw on 20 June 1947 and the estate was worth £2,902 5s 6d.
