Wright, William John
William John Wright lived in 3 Percy Terrace with his wife and two children in 1921. He was born on 7 April 1883 in Ridsdale. He was the son of William Wright, a joiner who had been born near Newark, Nottinghamshire and his wife Jane Wright who had been born at Pundershaw, Shitlington. In 1891 the family of William John Wright and Elizabeth Wright and their children, Maria Wright (16), Thomas Wright (10), William (John) Wright (7) and Archibald Wright (2) were living in Rendall (sic) Terrace, Ridsdale. By 1901 the family had moved to Broomhope Mill and William John, aged 17, was working as a general labourer. His father was employed as a joiner working on the Ordnance Proof Works at the Steel and by 1911 William John had joined him but was working as a timekeeper and clerk. William John married Elizabeth Hedley in Bellingham in 1913. William was still working as a cashier and clerk at the Steel in 1921 but he and Elizabeth had moved into 3 Percy Terrace where they had two children – Ralph Hedley Wright (6) and Hannah Jane Wright (4). A visitor was Elizabeth’s mother, the widowed Hannah Hedley aged 73. In the succeeding years William moved back to Broomhope where he became the farmer (grassland only) at Broomhope Farm. Elizabeth and Hannah were both ‘assisting on the farm.’ William John Wright of Broomhope Farm died in the RVI, Newcastle on 27 June 1940 with administration of an estate worth £853 6s 4d to his widow, Elizabeth.
