Armstrong, George b1870
George Armstrong the son of George and Margaret Armstrong occupied 1 Cruddas Terrace in 1901. George Junior who was born 11 June 1870 and at the age of nine months was living in 2 Hutchinson Street Bellingham with his parents. The family was still at the same address when he was ten in 1881. In 1891 he was working as a farm servant for John Smith, farmer at Ealingham, Bellingham. He married Elizabeth Armstrong from Horton, Bebside in 1899. It would appear that his wife died in 1917 but he remarried in 1926. His new wife, Winifred Thorburn was much younger (born 1899) from Fourstones. They had one child, Elizabeth born 11 February 1928. George was a County Council roadman from at least 1901 until he retired – described as ‘retired roadman’ living at 8 Percy Street in 1939. He lived to be 89, not dying until the 4th Quarter of 1959.
